Caught in the Middle
Dr. Phil turns to Kathy and says, "You want to know why he would stay in this. I want to know why you would. Why would you stay in this? What would be the appeal?"
Kathy thinks for a moment before responding. "The appeal would be to keep my family together," she says.
"Is there anything that's been said here today that would tell you to tear those divorce papers up and move him back in?"
"No," she says.
"One of the things I've always said is the only thing worse than being in a bad relationship for, say, a year, is being in a bad relationship for a year and one day," Dr. Phil tells her. "You just have to be honest with yourself about what's going on. At this point, if you get back into this relationship with Angelo, you're going to get what you've had in your relationship with Angelo. So I'm telling you, under no circumstances is he in a mindset that you should reconcile this relationship. Absolutely, unequivocally no. You will just get more heartache and probably wind up pregnant with another kid."
Dr. Phil explains that if Kathy wants to give it one more try and make her marriage work, she and Angelo need serious marriage counseling. He tells Angelo, "I don't believe that you could make this commitment to her and keep it at this point. Don't you have doubts yourself as to whether or not you could really keep this?"
"Of course I have doubts," he says.
"How many times have you told her ‘I'm done. I'm through. I'm not going to do it'?"
"A number of times I've said it, and I lied," Angelo says.
"So, why now?" Dr. Phil asks.
"Because sometimes you get to a point where you realize that you're wrong, you're completely wrong, that you're about to lose the thing that you worked so hard to build all of these years, and you really don't want to lose that," he says. Angelo says this realization came when he received the divorce papers.
